CSA FAQ

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we get. If you have any other questions about our Winter and Summer CSA or CSAs in general, feel free to contact us. We would love to hear from you.

 

 

How do pickups work?

Each location will be set up farm stand style. We do not pre-box shares with our CSA. You will be able to pick your own vegetables and other food, guided by a pick up list. When you arrive you, will be greeted by one of the farmers from Heron Pond. They will help you get signed in and give you a list of the food in the share that week, or it will be on the “share wall.” Feel free to ask the farmers any questions about what is going on at the farm. We try to keep everyone up to date about our season.

 

Where can I pick up my share?

We offer Winter and Summer share pickups at three locations. Those locations are in Dover, Portsmouth, and at our farm stand in South Hampton. The Dover pickup is on Tuesdays, and the Portsmouth pickup is on Wednesdays. Pick up times at both of these locations are from 3:00pm-6:30pm in the summer and 3:00pm-6:00pm in the winter. For share pickups at our Farm Stand in South Hampton, there is no need to choose a day come anytime during business hours. Our summer hours are 9:00am-6:00pm, 7 days a week (May 1st through Thanksgiving). And our winter hours are Thursday through Sunday from 11:00am-6:00pm (Thanksgiving through May 1st).

What happens if I miss my pick up?

If you can't make it to a pick-up the best thing to do is to get a friend or neighbor to pick up your food that week. 

Dover and Portsmouth shares are bagged and left at your pickup site for 24 hrs. After that time they are donated to others. Please let us know if you will be picking up late so we don't leave more than necessary. 

If you pick up at the farm stand you can double up next time you come in, no need to let us know in advance. Each new share week begins on Monday in the summer.

Please understand that some of the food may not be available for these make-up shares due to the seasonal nature of our offerings.

 

What if I go away on vacation?

If you can't make it to a pick-up the best thing to do is to get a friend or neighbor to pick up your food that week. 

NEW! Go to the Vacation Hold page under CSA on our website to let us know when you won't be picking up and schedule a time to get your double share to make up for the missed one, we ask that you limit this to just once a season.

What is in a winter share?

Heron Pond Farm grows food in the winter. We use eight greenhouses to get us through the deep winter months of January and February. We also employ a system of season extenders to have green fresh vegetables from outside late in the fall and early in the spring. This makes our winter shares more then just root crops. Imagine sweet potatoes, kale or chard, arugula, carrots, parsley, onions, beets, celery root, apples, winter squash just to name a few!

 

 

Why does my deposit need to be in so soon?

We usually sell out so signing up early will guarantee you a spot. We have 200 shares available for the winter CSA and 400 in the summer. Heron Pond Farm depends on selling all these shares to meet the needs of the farm. The timing is key for us, we need to start investing in the next seasons crop well in advance from when we pick the first tomato. CSA funds go towards staffing, fertilizer, seeds etc... 

 

We also believe that everyone looking to eat fresh, local food should have an opportunity to do so no matter what their economic situation. Heron Pond Farm has always honored payment plans we make one on one with our shareholders.

 

However, if no deposit is put down, and no payment arrangement is made we have no way of knowing if you intend on participating with us. We have had a few folks register in the past only to find that it did not fit in with their plans. Meanwhile, we turn others away when we are full. Getting a deposit or making a payment plan provides us with a way of being sure that we are providing great local food to as many families as we can.

 

Why is there a $30 fee for the Dover and Portsmouth locations?

In our efforts to keep local food as affordable as possible added expense of bringing food off the farm hasn't been built into the cost of the share. The fee covers things like tolls, gas, truck maintenance, staffing to load, unload and man the pick-up and insurance.
